What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that is cemented over an injured or recently treated tooth to help protect it, while simultaneously restoring its function so you can continue using it to eat, speak, and smile normally.

They are typically made from durable, tooth-colored materials, such as porcelain, that can be customized to match the size, shape, and tone of your natural enamel for beautiful results that no one is likely to notice. These prosthetics can last 5 to 15+ years with routine maintenance and proper care.

They are often used to:

  • Repair injured teeth so you can continue using them normally.
  • Cover a single dental implant post to close a gap in your grin from one missing tooth.
  • Anchor a dental bridge in place.
  • Improve the size and durability of teeth that are too short or worn down.
  • Protect a tooth that recently underwent a root canal.

The Dental Crown Process

You must schedule a consultation first, so our team can examine your tooth and determine whether this is the best way to treat it. If so, we’ll gently smooth any rough enamel edges or remove a small amount so your crown fits correctly.

Then, we’ll make mess-free digital impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory to craft your prosthetic, unless you’ve opted for a same-day restoration, in which case we use the information to 3D print it in-house.

It can take the lab a couple of weeks to finish a traditional dental crown, so we may place a temporary one to shield the affected tooth during this time. When the finished product is delivered, we’ll contact you for a fitting and make any needed adjustments before carefully cementing it onto your injured tooth.

Finally, we remove any excess material and polish your crown to send you home with a beautifully restored smile.
