Gum Disease Is Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a natural way your body responds to the presence of harmful bacteria. This inflammatory disease is a serious infection that can affect one or more teeth. Different types of gum disease include:
- Gingivitis – the mildest form of gum disease
- Periodontitis
Gum disease begins when bacteria in plaque cause the gums to become inflamed. The mildest form of gum disease that has little or no discomfort is gingivitis. Chronic periodontitis is more evident in adulthood. If gum disease is not treated, it can lead to damaged teeth and even tooth loss.
Symptoms Of Gum Disease
Any form of gum disease is often caused by poor oral hygiene practices. Gum disease can be a bit unpleasant. Evidence of gum disease include:
