It’s summer in Delaware! That means vacations, family reunions, no school, late-night bonfires and a general lack of concern for schedules and routines. You are probably tempted to let the kids stay up late watching movies or playing board games. You may be a bit more relaxed on what they eat, that’s totally understandable! But, the team at Dental Associates of Delaware want to remind you that summer shouldn’t mean a break from a healthy oral hygiene routine. Keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy year-round, and don’t forget these oral hygiene routines throughout the summer:
- Regular Brushing – The American Dental Association is clear on the routine brushing a minimum of twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. So set that routine in play and make sure you and your children brush at least after breakfast and before bed. Even if that bedtime is a little later than during the school year. Always use a soft-bristled brush and make sure you spend at least two minutes reaching each surface of every tooth.
- Regular Flossing – Although it takes a little more time, you won’t want to eliminate regular flossing at least once a day from your summer schedule. Like brushing, flossing can remove food particles and plaque from in between your teeth that can cause cavities.
- Healthy Diet – During the summer, fresh fruits and vegetables are abundant. Take advantage of them as snacks in your family’s diet. Healthy foods provide vitamins and minerals that keep teeth healthy. So if you’re full of healthy food, there is little room left for sugary snacks and sodas which should be avoided.
- Checkups – Stay on track with regular checkups at our Brandywine / Wilmington, Hockessin, Middletown or Newark offices all summer long. With vacations and kids able to visit during the day, our available appointment times will surely accommodate your busy summer schedule. In fact, summertime is the perfect time to come in for your regular checkup where we will clean and examine your teeth, and discuss any treatment options with you.
Remember, even though summer means fun, it also means maintaining the healthy oral hygiene habits you developed throughout the year.
